If theatres were being imagined today, we probably wouldn’t build them in the way we have come to expect. Segregating the social space and performance space, so that everyone must sit quietly, in the dark, on uncomfortable seats in a warm auditorium feels increasingly dated, abelist and classist. Having to pay more to be able to get a better view, dressing up for the occasion and only being allowed to go to the loo at certain times are nothing more than castoff rules from a Victorian age.

By starting from the ground up, The PurpleDoor proposes a radical alternative, which brings theatre back to its roots in community engagement and civic pride. Our culture will be free at the point of access, with a forward facing bar and a focus on supporting working-class audiences and artists.

We're currently recruiting for Trustees with a Finance/Accounting background, Human Resources and Legal background in relation to charity fundraising. We would love to speak to potential Trustees from the black, Asian and minority ethnic community colleagues as we are currently under-represented on the Board.
