Job Description

Would you like to see a fairer justice system for children and mentally vulnerable people detained and interviewed by police? Could you lead, guide and coordinate our Board of Trustees, blending their complimentary skills and experience?

Appropriate adults (AAs) safeguard the interests of children and vulnerable people in police custody and voluntary interviews; this includes ensuring their effective participation, fair treatment and the exercise of rights.

Established in 1995, the National Appropriate Adult Network provides a national centre of expertise. We work with practitioners, providers, commissioners, academics and policy makers to maximise the effectiveness of AAs.

As Chair, you can expect to:

  • support and encourage the strategic development of the organisation
  • work closely with the Board and Chief Executive
  • maximise board involvement
  • attend regular board meetings (4 per year)
  • coordinate subgroups on specific issues (e.g. Fundraising, Diversity & Inclusion, Finance)
  • keep as up to date as possible with the business of the company
  • offer timely feedback and responses for the business in hand
  • act as an ambassador, represent and advocate for NAAN where appropriate.

We offer:

  • A well-established, financially stable charity
  • A welcoming, inclusive board of trustees and staff team
  • An opportunity to make practical improvements to the experience of children and mentally vulnerable adults who have contact with the justice system
  • An opportunity to lead the trustees of a small, national charity, who have a range of governance experience
  • A board and staff team committed to a single strategy and a period of growth and change.

We recognise the role of power and privlege in the charity sector. We welcome trustees regardless of age, gender, sexuality, socio-economic background, ethnic background or disability and people with lived experience of the criminal justice system. We encourage expressions of interest from people in disadvantaged or under represented groups.
