Job Description

The Engineering Development Trust (EDT) is an educational charity established 30+ years ago. Our mission is to connect young people with industry and inspire STEM futures.

Young people are at the heart of all that we do and through providing industry informed, curriculum enhancing learning experiences, we help them develop personal and interpersonal skills, fulfil their potential and make informed decisions about their future. We recognise their achievement through Industrial Cadets accreditation and awards, an industry-led, nationally recognised quality benchmark.

We are going through an exciting period of transformation. Over the last 20 months, we have moved to a hybrid delivery model (face-to-face and virtual) and re-organised our charity to better meet the needs of the young people we serve. With our Board, we are developing a long term strategy and business plan to grow and thrive, supporting young people of all backgrounds on their way to a successful career. We are supported by long-standing funders from the corporate and charitable worlds.

We are looking for a new Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees as our current Treasurer is reaching the end of his tenure. The objective of the role is to oversee the financial matters of the charitable company.

This is an exciting voluntary position where an experienced, motivated finance professional can bring their expertise and fresh ideas and help EDT achieve its ambitions. Our trustees, lead by Chair Elena Rodriguez-Falcon, are enthusiastic and engaged in EDT’s work and mission and we are proud to have 4 EDT alumni on our Board.

We welcome applications from all finance professionals, irrespective of their work situation (in/out of work, semi-retired, retired).

Commitments:

As Trustee/Treasurer, you will be part of the Board and a member of sub-committees (Audit & Risk, Remuneration), required to attend at least 9 meetings a year.

You will be in regular contact with our CEO and Finance Director. You may on occasions represent the Charity Trustees in meetings with auditors or external consultants.

You will have the opportunity to join EDT’s graduation and celebration events where you can directly experience the difference we make to young people.

This is an unpaid trustee role, mainly remote (bar 2 Board meetings in central London a year, for which travel expenses are paid). It is a 3-year term with the possibility of being re-elected to the Board.

In addition to the general duties of a Charity Trustee, your responsibilities will include:

  • Report to the Board at regular intervals about the financial health of the organisation
  • Ensure that the Board receives appropriate financial information on the activities of the charity and is aware of its financial duties and responsibilities
  • Work with the Finance Director to ensure that effective, appropriate financial measures and controls are in place
  • Ensure the accounts are prepared and disclosed to the required standards
  • Input into and review the investment and reserves policies
  • Oversee the appointment of auditors/financial advisors and review on a regular basis
  • Be assured that the financial resources meet the charity’s present and future needs

What we’re looking for in our Treasurer:

  • Qualified accountant with at least 10 years’ experience
  • Understanding of the principles of charity finance. Experience of preparing charity accounts a bonus.
  • Strategic financial thinking and planning
  • Pragmatic and flexible
  • A consultative, constructive and supportive style
  • Ability to operate within a Board or similar senior environment

The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.
