Job Description

Trustee - Are you apssionate about Access to Justice? Join Support Through Court and help us extend our support to Litigants in Person facing life changing challenges in Civil, Family and Tribunal Courts.

The primary responsibility of all trustees is to make sure that the charity complies with its governing document and the relevant legal requirements. This involves, amongst other factors, setting appropriate financial controls, managing the charity’s resources and risks responsibly, and acting  in the charity’s best interests at all times.

The role of trustees in Support Through Court includes careful oversight of all its activities and active participation in ensuring that the charity is well managed.

Trustees are expected to participate in board meetings and also to take an active part in at least one of the board’s committees in supporting the management of the charity.

To do the above, we look for people who:

  • Will show active commitment to the purpose of the charity: what Support Through Court stands for and does, and how we do it through our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion
  • Participate fully in meetings, being well prepared and willing to ask questions and challenge decisions
  • Possess sound judgement to help make the best decisions for the charity, decisions that balance commitment with objectivity
  • Make use of their own skills and experience to offer active support in one or more areas of the charity’s work.
  • Are ready to represent Support Through Court internally and in the outside world
  • Demonstrate agility and adaptability in responding to often high levels of change.

Experience and Competencies

There is no one essential background: we look for a diverse team of trustees from different backgrounds, including volunteers and people who have used Support Through Court’s services.

We look for these strengths in all trustees:

  • A clear mind and the ability to think strategically: to consider both the big picture and the details in reaching conclusions.
  • The readiness to collaborate with others and to work in a team
  • The readiness to contribute and challenge at meetings, to ensure the best possible outcome for Support Through Court and our clients
  • Strong communication skills - in listening as well as talking or writing
  • The ability and willingness to devote the time that is needed.

The following could also be helpful but are not essential:

  • Some experience in the charity sector and an understanding of the legal duties and liabilities of being a trustee
  • Management experience, whether in business, education or other contexts
  • Some knowledge of the legal profession, financial management or IT.

The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.
