ACTIVITIES WORKER

JOB SUMMARY

  • Under the direction of the Care and Activities Manager, and the Chief Executive, to oversee the delivery and operation of activity classes and events for older adults at the Sudbury Neighbourhood Centre, three days per week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
  • To liaise with external tutors and partner organisations, to deliver sessional activities and events for older adults in the Centre on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and with a small team of staff and volunteers.
  • To lead activity groups for older adults in the Centre.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Activity Programme

  1. To co-ordinate and liaise with external providers, tutors, and Centre’s staff, to ensure smooth delivery of the Centre’s activity programme for older adults three days per week, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
  2. To develop and lead activity groups in the Centre on Monday, Wednesday and Friday each week, promoting health and wellbeing for older adults.
  3. To record attendance at the activity sessions on attendance spreadsheets and databases.
  4. To consult with service users to in order to identify their social and recreational requirements according to their likes/dislikes, abilities and personal preferences.
  5. To formulate and maintain a stimulating programme of activities for groups and for individuals whilst considering residents particular likes and dislikes as appropriate.
  6. To liaise with activity tutors to ensure continuity of service, and coverage when activity tutors are ill or on holidays
  7. To support any volunteers in their roles within the Centre to support the activity programmes.
  8. To provide necessary information about the activities programme to the Centre’s marketing officer and Chief Executive.
  9. To put procedures in place to regularly assess the effectiveness of the social events and activities programme.
  10. To work as an active team member with your colleagues to ensure the successful delivery of the Centre’s programmes.
  11. To be the principal keyholder responsible for ensuring the premises are unlocked at 9am, and locked after 4.30pm, for the activity sessions and groups run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays each week.
  12. To be the responsible person in case of emergencies at the centre when the Chief Executive is not present and to have a First Aid qualification.
  13. To be available to work unsocial hours during the weekday evenings and weekends as required and directed by the Chief Executive.
  14. To deputise for the Care and Activities Manager when that person is not available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays each week.

2. Personal Development

  1. To participate fully in all training courses provided at the Centre or provided by outside agencies on the Centre’s behalf.

3. Communication

  1. To communicate the care and activity needs of service users to the Chief Executive, the Board of Trustees, and to liaise with external agencies such as social services, GPs and community care staff.
  2. To prepare a report for the Chief Executive and Trustees on a quarterly basis, making recommendations where appropriate.

4. Information and Record Keeping

  1. To ensure that attendance records are recorded in a timely and accurate way on the Centre’s computer systems.
  2. To ensure that Centres data protection policies and procedures relating to user confidentiality are followed.
  3. Take the necessary precautions when transmitting or sharing information, in accordance with the Centres data protection policies and procedures.

  2. To understand basic issues regarding safeguarding of vulnerable adults, or domestic/family violence.

PERSON SPECIFICATION – Activity Worker

a) Essential Criteria

  1. Relevant experience of supporting older adults to lead fulfilled and meaningful lives through physical exercise, mental stimulation and social engagement and interaction.
  2. Experience of devising and implementing activity programmes, including supervising external activity tutors, to provide a diverse range of services to meet the assessed needs of all service users.
  3. Experience of leading activity groups and running programmes.
  4. Experience of devising and leading activity groups for older adults.
  5. Experience of writing reports for managers.
  6. Experience of being a key holder and facilities management, including safety & security measures such as fire alarms and door locks.
  7. Ability to work with limited supervision.
  8. Experience of using ICT systems in the workplace (i.e. Microsoft Office Word and Excel) and use of work related emails.
  9. Ability to work unsociable hours when required (e.g. evenings, weekends).
  10. Excellent written and verbal English Language skills.

b) Desirable Criteria

  1. Able to speak a second language.
  2. Experience of handling cash and cashless payments.
