Job Description

Would you like to make a difference to the lives of young people affected by violence? We are looking for new Trustees to join our board.

StreetDoctors teaches lifesaving skills to young people at risk of violence across the UK. Our young healthcare volunteers teach emergency first aid to 11-25 year olds, and create safe spaces for them to discuss attitudes to violence. We empower young people to become street doctors in their own communities.

You will be joining a skilled and committed Board of Trustees, an expert staff team, and hundreds of volunteer healthcare students across the UK. You will need to be able to both lead our strategic thinking and help us develop effective and realistic approaches for a dynamic volunteer-led organisation.

If you have professional expertise, or experience in any of the areas below, we would particularly like to hear from you:

  • Safeguarding
  • Research and impact evaluation
  • Income generation and fundraising
  • Relevant lived experience of the issues StreetDoctors seeks to address

We welcome and encourage applications from people across the UK, regardless of background, age, faith, disability and sexuality. Our board is currently under-represented in relation to young trustees (18-30), people with lived experience of violence and people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds. We are very keen to diversify our board so that it is representative of the communities we serve, and we would therefore be particularly interested in applications from these groups.

New Trustees will be supported through a period of mentoring during initial board meetings and on an ongoing basis if needed

About StreetDoctors:

StreetDoctors is a network of volunteer healthcare students across the UK united by our passion to tackle the issue of youth violence. Through teaching emergency lifesaving skills, we challenge attitudes to violence, treating young people as potential lifesavers capable of acting to assist others and make a positive contribution to their community. Currently over 430 volunteers are located in 22 teams across 17 cities in the UK including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow and Cardiff.

StreetDoctors’ volunteers taught 4039 young people in 2018 and are on track to reach at least 5,000 by the end of the year. Since the inception of the first StreetDoctors team in Liverpool in 2008 we estimate we have delivered emergency life-saving skills to over 15,000 vulnerable young people in total.

Our evaluation data shows that 95% of young people complete sessions knowing what to do when someone is bleeding or unconscious and 85% are willing to act in a medical emergency.

Strategic Plan: Our Mission, Vision and Values and our latest Strategic Plan are available on our website.

Time Commitment: The time commitment for a StreetDoctors trustee is expected to be approximately 6 days per year which includes regular meetings and ad hoc engagement.

If you are interested in working with us and would like further information, you can find more details about StreetDoctors, the work we do and the responsibilities of being a Trustee on our website.

How to Apply: Please send a copy of your CV (no more than two sides) and a covering letter to Lucie Russell,  our CEO, telling us why you are interested in joining StreetDoctors board and what you will bring to the organisation.

The closing date for applications is 5th January 2020

If you are shortlisted you will be invited to an informal interview with the Chair of Trustees and the Chief Executive to discuss the role. You are encouraged to use this opportunity to ask any questions and fully understand StreetDoctors and the trustee role. Following this you will be invited to observe a StreetDoctors board meeting after which, if appropriate, you will be formally recommended for adoption onto the board.
