Background

Right at the heart of what we do, we deliver services each year to around 1,500 individuals recovering from mental health issues.

Oxford’s non-white population is 36%, yet currently only 10% of Restore beneficiaries are from BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) communities. Restore is committed to tackling this massive discrepancy, by seeking to improve links with local BAME communities through Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training and follow-up. MHFA is a programme developed by MHFA England, which teaches people how to recognise the symptoms of mental health problems, how to provide initial help and how to guide a person towards appropriate professional help. Restore has been delivering this programme for 10 years, but fails to reach BAME communities. We believe that training can start great conversations to address this

Aim of this role

The aim of this role is to champion diversity to encourage and promote inclusion and equality for those from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds. This will ensure that the work is reflected in Restore’s values that we advocate.

The BAME MHFA Instructor will be the key representative of BAME members who will work to help improve stigma around mental ill health in BAME communities by enhancing interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening.

The overall purpose of this exciting opportunity is to deliver MHFA courses to BAME communities to help reduce the stigma and improve knowledge and understanding around mental ill health.

About Restore

Restore is an Oxfordshire charity that provides expert support in innovative rehabilitation, employment and training support for people with mental health problems. Our aim is to work with people with mental health problems to enable them to achieve their maximum potential.

Restore is a charitable company limited by guarantee and our trustees are elected by our membership and run the organisation on their behalf.

We believe that everyone has talents and abilities, and the capacity to make a valuable contribution to the community. We believe that people with mental health problems have the right to work and the right to the support they need to become and remain employed. We believe that the stigma associated with mental health problems damages the whole community and we work to challenge this discrimination.

Restore works in Oxfordshire with people who have mental health problems. We work with about 1,000 people a year and enable people in their journey of recovery and support them to get paid work.

Restore provides two main types of support. These are coaching and recovery groups. Coaching is one to one support aimed at enabling the person supported to do something specific. Restores coaching support focuses on supporting people to get paid work, to go back to work after a period of sickness, or to start education. Recovery groups provide people with the opportunity to come together in a group and work on their journey of recovery together. They use practical tasks (such as gardening, woodwork, catering) to make this possible.

The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.
