Job Description

Population Matters is seeking new Trustees

Population Matters regularly recruits to its 12-person Trustee Board which oversees, guides and ensures good governance for the organisation.  We employ 9 FTE paid staff, all of whom work remotely which has given Population Matters (PM) a resilience during the Covid-19 pandemic and helped maintain income and activities over the last year.

As we embark on our next 3-10 year strategy with ambitions to grow PM internationally and in influence, we are looking in particular for someone to fill the role of Treasurer (and Chair the Board Sub-Committee for Finance, Risk and Audit), plus someone with knowledge and experience in human resources/people development.  While some non-executive or Board level experience will be beneficial, if you feel you have something different to offer please get in touch. We seek people who align with and feel passionate about our mission and values and who bring a range of knowledge, experience and networks.

We are committed to improving diversity throughout our organisation, so are especially keen to hear from sections of the community usually under-represented in governance bodies.

The term of office is 3 years, renewable once. Trustees give their time voluntarily and reasonable expenses are reimbursed. Meetings are quarterly, with occasional intra-Board conversations, currently all by Zoom. You should familiarise yourself with the formal duties of any Trustee of a charitable organisation as recommended by the Charity Commission.

About Population Matters

We are a small charity with a mission to drive positive, large-scale action through fostering choices that help achieve a sustainable human population and regenerate our environment.  We campaign, undertake research, and do all we can to encourage an open, fair-minded debate about population.  The solutions we promote are positive, practical and ethical: encouraging smaller families, inspiring people to consume sustainably, all with the aim of enabling everyone to enjoy a decent quality of life whilst respecting and sustaining the natural ecosystems upon which all life on earth depends.

Our Patrons include David Attenborough, Jane Goodall and Chris Packham, Jonathon Porritt is our President, our Executive Director is Robin Maynard, and the Chair of the Board is Sara Parkin (biographies on PM website).

Our 2019-20 Annual Report with our latest audited accounts may be found on our website.
