Could you be My Death, My Decision’s next political campaign director?

My Death, My Decision wants the law to allow those who are terminally ill or incurably suffering the option of a legal, safe, and compassionate assisted death. We are looking for a successor to our dedicated political campaign director, who is taking a sabbatical.

Who we are 

My Death, My Decision is a grassroots, not-for-profit campaign group that wants the laws of our country to allow those who are terminally ill or incurably suffering the option of a legal, safe, and compassionate assisted death. 

We trace our roots back to 2009, when our predecessor organisation began to represent the interests of those facing constant and unbearable suffering, at a time when no other right-to-die organisations would, and to advocate on their behalf to secure a lasting change in the law. We incorporated as a not-for-profit company in 2019.

My Death, My Decision has quickly become one of the leading assisted dying organisations in England and Wales. We are at the forefront of social change: nearly 90% of the public now favours a change in the law to allow assisted dying for those who are incurably suffering or terminally ill. 

We are committed to an evidence-based law which would balance individual choice alongside robust safeguards, and we are not afraid to confront uncomfortable truths or expose specious arguments. 

Through the work of our members, supporters, patrons and activists we help to broaden the assisted dying debate and seek to enshrine the values of autonomy, dignity, and compassion into assisted dying legislation. 

Could you be My Death, My Decision’s next political campaign director?

As our current political campaign director is taking a sabbatical, we want to recruit a political campaigner or someone with a similar background to take on that role.

We need someone who combines a strategic view with an enthusiasm for changing the hearts and minds of politicians to achieve a change in the law, and who would like to support our members and supporters in having their voices heard by their MPs. You would:

  • Work closely with MDMD’s Campaign and Communications Manager to meet key politicians and, outside of pandemic restrictions, organise Parliamentary events
  • Join MDMD’s Campaign Strategy Group, which meets monthly
  • Progress the political objectives that form part of our overall campaign strategy
  • Oversee appropriate responses to government and other public body consultations and to parliamentary committees
  • Maintain and develop My Death, My Decision’s relationships with relevant UK Government departments, participating in working parties and consultations, as well as with parliamentarians and their staff, providing them with briefings on Bills before Parliament, and other matters, PQs, and EDMs etc as required; and with relevant groups within political parties, providing them with briefings and supporting their growth and development
  • Prepare reports for and attend quarterly Board meetings

What are we looking for?

The candidate will have an understanding of the issues surrounding assisted dying and have experience in some form of political or voluntary organisation campaigning. All MDMD meetings are currently being held online, but in the future, close proximity to London (i.e. Westminster Parliament) or Cardiff (i.e. the Senedd) would be an advantage.

You will be a good fit for this role if you have:

  • Political experience
  • Passion for changing the law on assisted dying
  • Experience in delivering campaign messaging
  • Enthusiasm and a desire to enthuse others
  • Strong strategic thinking skills
  • Strong time management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Time commitment

The role requires an ongoing time commitment of five to ten hours per week. This appointment will initially be for one year, 1st January to 31st December 2021, with a handover month in December 2020 to be brought up to speed by the outgoing Director, and the opportunity to either job-share or stand for re-election in January 2022.

Directors are unpaid, but reasonable out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed. Currently Board meetings take place remotely, however we hope in the future to return to face-to-face meetings which usually take place in London.
