Trustee, Fundraising
muktangan educational trust

Job Description

At Muktangan Educational Trust, we passionately believe in the transformative power of child-centred, community-based education for under-served communities in India.

We are looking for committed and motivated individuals with established fundraising experience and/or connections in the financial sector to join our board of trustees.  The new trustees will make a significant contribution to our fundraising activities through sharing their expertise and connections and working with us to increase the charity's income and donor base.

Who are we?

We are a small charity run by a board of seven trustees which works to raise funds in the UK to support the work of Muktangan in India. Muktangan provides child-centred, community-based education for disadvantaged children through seven schools within the mainstream system in Mumbai, and teacher training for local people in a dedicated teacher education centre, creating a sustainable model.

In the context of a strategic pivot agreed on by the trustees, we are looking to drive a step-change in our fundraising activities in order to help ensure the long-term sustainability of the Muktangan project in India.

The role

We are looking to add two new trustees to our leadership team. Each of the new trustees will:

  • share a commitment to changing lives by improving access to quality education in India.
  • have established expertise in fundraising and/or connections in the financial sector to help the charity increase its income and donor base.
  • have the motivation and energy to work outside formal board meetings, independently or in small teams, to drive progress towards the charity’s objectives.

All trustees work as volunteers. Each trustee should be able to commit to the role for a period of at least three years.

Trustees are required to attend four full board meetings a year and to contribute to discussions of key issues affecting the charity, as well as participating in additional sub-committee meetings or calls, as required.  Meetings are normally held in-person in Central London, but some meetings are conducted remotely, by Skype or conference call.

Duties and responsibilities

You will be expected to make a significant contribution to the charity by sharing your fundraising expertise and your connections, to help the charity increase its income and donor base, and so help to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Muktangan project in India.

You will work with the Chair and other trustees to develop a strategy for building relationships with potential donors and implementing the agreed strategy, help to write winning presentations and attend meetings with potential donors. You will also advise on how to maximise the potential for best outcomes on applications for funding.

You will have an instrumental role in identifying, accessing and building relationships with charitable trusts, foundations, corporates and other institutional funders as potential donors to the charity.

You will advise on and assist with writing funding applications to trusts and foundations, as well as ‘charity of the year’ proposals to corporates.  You will also play a key role in presenting proposals to, and attending meetings with, potential donors.

Key skills/experience

  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills.
  • Strong networking skills, to represent the charity to potential donors, including trusts, foundations, corporates and individuals.
  • Experience or knowledge of the education sector a bonus, but not essential.
  • Connections with the Indian diaspora in the UK a bonus, but not essential.

The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.
