Job Description

Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, is seeking two new trustees to join its Board.  Our mission is to achieve a better walking environment and inspire people to walk more. Our trustees set our strategic direction and help our leadership navigate the new landscape for walking.

We have come a long way since our foundation as the Pedestrians Association in 1929, but our ambition is undimmed. We are a modern organisation with an excellent reputation for evidence-based policy, and innovative campaigning. Our high impact, award-winning behaviour change walk to school projects reach around half a million children in nearly 2000 primary schools each year.  We have a team of over 80 colleagues, with offices in London, Edinburgh, and Cardiff and team members based in local and central government. 

Millions of people have recently reconnected with walking. We are keen to work with our partners to embed that behaviour change, campaign for sustained investment in walking infrastructure and ensure that walking is the natural choice for everyday journeys.  Walking more is key to reaching Net Zero carbon emissions, reducing air pollution and improving public health.

We welcome all experience but to ensure that we have a range of expertise, perspective, and skills within our Board, we are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with data management, commercial, or charity fundraising skills.

You can be based anywhere in the UK, but an understanding of the rules which govern UK charities and an interest in walking and public spaces is desirable. Whatever your background, a commitment to the values and objectives of the charity is crucial. 

We want our Board of Trustees to reflect the diverse communities we serve and we welcome applications from disabled people, people from a minority ethnic background, and from Wales in particular.

You do not need experience as a trustee to apply, your experience in the wider world is more important and you will receive support from us to ensure that your time as a trustee of Living Streets is an enjoyable and rewarding one.This is a great opportunity for the right person, and we are looking for someone energetic and passionate about our work. Our board is currently made up of thirteen supportive trustees from across the UK with varied professional and personal experience from the public health, urban design and planning, civil engineering, local government and marketing/campaigning sectors.

Meetings are held five times a year plus occasional task specific meetings. Meetings are currently held via Teams and we will keep Zoom attendance as a permanent option for all trustees in future.

These roles are voluntary and unpaid, although appropriate expenses will be paid.
