Job Description

Lewisham Speaking Upa charitable organisation providing both 1-2-1 and Self-Advocacy support to people with learning disabilities living in the London Borough of Lewisham, have a new role for a Parents Advocate.

You will have at least 2 years proven Advocacy experience – advocacy qualification would be an advantage but not essential.

The successful candidate will:

  • provide advocacy in the London Borough of Lewisham to people with learning disabilities who are parents, or soon to become parents.You will ensure parents are listened to, that they understand certain and essential information, and that their views and wishes are taken into account.
  • set up and facilitate (with support from volunteers) a support group specifically for parents with a learning disability and/or autism.
  • collate a library of existing ‘Easy Read’ support material designed to benefit parents with a learning disability, as well as creating in-house easy read literature that can support parents to better understand the process of becoming parents and any legal procedures or requirements.

This is initially a pilot project funded for one year with a good opportunity for development and extension.

This role provides an exciting and rewarding challenge within a supportive team, who share a strong belief and enthusiasm for independent advocacy and our work.
