About Us

International Students House, a charity providing support and accommodation for international and UK undergraduate and post-graduate students, is seeking up to two Trustees to join its Board of Governors. The ethos of the House is to create ‘a home away from home’ for students from over 100 nations, studying at over 60 higher education degree awarding institutions. Its main activities are the provision of scholarships, affordable housing, social activities and welfare support.

The House is completely independent and receives no government or local authority funding.To fund its charitable activities, the House manages a conference venue operation and a public entertainment business with a modern, medium-sized central London venue, 229.Recent awards include best Student Accommodation in London 2018, Championing Diversity award 2019, Best Student Community Centre - Greater London 2020, and London Healthy Workplace Award 2020.

The Role 

The Board is responsible for setting the strategy, budget and policy framework of International Students House, and supporting the CEO and senior management team in its implementation.

Trustees will also be members of appropriate sub–committees and may be asked to occupy the posts of Chair and Vice Chair in the future.The Board and sub-committees each meet four times a year, usually starting at 4:00-5:30pm, via zoom during covid.  In addition, there are many evening social events for our residents which Trustees will be invited to attend to provide the opportunity to meet our students and stakeholders.Trustees are appointed for three year terms.

About You

We are seeking candidates who have:

  • Board level or strategic experience in the private, public or charitable sector;
  • Experience of managing organisations through periods of significant change;
  • Strong communication skills with an enquiring mind and a willingness to challenge constructively;
  • Financial acumen with an understanding of finance systems;
  • Strong analytical skills, judgement and decision-making;
  • An appreciation of the distinct values and mission of ISH ;
  • Understanding of other cultures and issues faced by international students in the UK

We are particularly looking for individuals who have experience and skills in:

  • Property
  • Fundraising
  • Finance/investments
  • IT/digital
