Job Description

Horatio’s Garden charity is looking to appoint an experienced charity Finance Director to its growing, committed and friendly team. We are looking for a dynamic, fully qualified accountant who can bring outstanding financial management skills and experience from the charitable sector.

Based at the charity’s head office in Salisbury you will become part of the Senior Management team and develop the finance department to meet the needs of the growing charity. You will be joining the organisation at an exciting time and the role has great scope to help the team to further improve the lives of people affected by spinal injuries all over the UK. The charity currently has four gardens open, one in construction, one in capital appeal and one in planning. The vision is to have thriving Horatio’s Gardens in all the UK’s eleven spinal injury centres.

The role is for 2/3 days a week. Remuneration dependent on experience.

The main responsibilities will be:

  • Providing the financial secretariat to the Board of Trustees
  • Supporting the team managers with reliable and timely financial information and analysis
  • Working with the senior management team contributing to the strategic planning and financial management of the charity
  • Developing the financial systems and procedures
  • Setting and implement budgets and financial plans
  • Management of the year-end audit process and preparation of annual statutory accounts compliant with the regulations for registered charities
  • Managing the financial team and ensuring the correct skill set and resources are employed 
  • Maintaining and developing the charity’s finance procedures, controls and policies
  • Ensuring that the charity meets all financial, legal and statutory requirements
  • Responsibility for VAT for the charity and trading company 
  • Monitoring and controlling cost-effectiveness to ensure value for money. 
  • Overseeing charity’s IT provision 
  • Ensuring the organisation is fully and appropriately insured
  • Making sure financial archives are appropriately retained and stored
  • Communicating effectively with team on a regular basis ensuring information is clear, accurate and timely 
  • Promote and adhere to the organisation’s culture and values.
  • Maintaining confidentiality at all times
  • Undertaking any other task commensurate with the job purpose, or allocated by the trustees on an ad hoc or continuing basis to ensure that all financial functions of the charity are performed 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential requirements:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent 
  • Fully qualified with a recognised accountancy body 
  • Extensive experience in charity finance and accounting practices to senior level
  • Experience of providing financial overview to boards and executive committees 
  • Exceptional levels of integrity and professional judgement. 
  • A proven track record of managing a team and supporting colleagues
  • Ability and skills to be hands on when required
  • Outstanding IT competency and experience of wide range of IT based systems  
  • Previous responsibility for managing VAT, PAYE and NIC 
  • Ability to take initiative with creative thinking to develop systems to meet the evolving needs of the team
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Patience and great people skills to give clear financial support to office and operational staff
  • Ability to present in a professional manner
  • Proficient in use of ICT, MS Office (including strong excel skills) and knowledge of Sage Business Accounting and Sage Payroll
  • A commitment to deliver to individual and organisational targets. 
  • Commitment to continuous improvement including own professional development. 
  • Willingness to be flexible and dynamic as the organisation needs change.
