Job Description

Volunteer Work - Mentoring Care Leavers

Grandmentors Wandsworth is looking for volunteer mentors, aged 45 plus to mentor young care leavers. This award-winning project recruits older mentors who can bring wisdom and experience to the role.

This is a community volunteer role in which you will be guiding young care leavers aged 16-25 helping them towards the path to independence, using skills such as empathy and listening.Advice & guidance regarding careers would be particularly useful, and being able to support young people whose first language is not English, as we have an increasing number of Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children (USAC) who would benefit from a mentor helping them to navigate a new life in the country.

Covid has been particularly hard on many people; jobs are scarce and the young have been hit hard by the shifting economy. Youth unemployment is nearing record levels, and often there are additional barriers for those young care leavers who are not in employment, education or training (NEET) and need a guiding hand and a role model to support them to find work, continue their education or begin training – ultimately giving them the skills and self-belief to lead successful and independent lives. This is what the Grandmentors scheme in Wandsworth offers.

Mentors can help by:

  • Providing career advice and guidance
  • Offering a work internship/placement
  • Providing practical support (e.g. helping a young UASC to register with a doctor, practice English speaking)
  • Offering emotional support; a friendly ear
  • Decrease the sense of loneliness

If you can give an hour a week to support a young person, we provide training, support and expenses when meeting a young person. A DBS check (free) is required. This project operates in the borough of Wandsworth and the surrounding boroughs. We do require you to fill in the application form. A role descriotion is also provided.

The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.
