Chair of the Board of Trustees

Cure Leukaemia’s remarkable progress over the 15 years since it was established has resulted in it becoming a nationally significant blood cancer charity. The charity’s single-minded focus on connecting blood cancer patients with novel life-saving drug and transplant therapies through internationally significant clinical trials has resulted in its establishment as a highly innovative and impactful charity  which is ideally placed to broaden its scope with a truly national and international reach.

This is therefore an incredibly exciting time to shape the future of an organisation which is ideally placed to consolidate its position as an innovative funder of patient facing medical research with global impact.

The role of Chair is pivotal for its continued success. The new Chair will be responsible, in  partnership with the CEO, for navigating the organisation to realise its ambition of becoming a major driving force and the leading blood cancer charity in the UK.

It is critically important that this strategy continues to set the charity apart with its impressive and positively disruptive culture within the hugely competitive UK not for profit sector.

The charity’s key strategic aim is to be the leading blood cancer charity in the UK within 5 years.

This bold yet achievable aim will drive the focus of the formulation and delivery of an integrated clinical and fundraising strategy with patients at the heart of all we do.

Key Responsibilities of role of Chair for Cure Leukaemia

Lead the CL Board of Trustees and CEO in setting the charity’s vision, mission, values, strategy, policies and procedures.

Effectively chair and set the agendas for the charity’s Trustees Board meetings which should reflect the salient issues and concerns for the organisation.

Ensure adherence with best practice in governance including compliance with all aspects of the running of a national charity.

Ensure that the performance of the Board of Trustees, is evaluated at least once a year.

Take the lead in formulating a Succession Plan for Trustees to ensure effective governance of the charity through the appropriate diversity of background and skills within the Board. .

Work closely with the CEO and review the performance of the CEO whilst provide mentoring and support to him and other members of the CL team if and where appropriate in order to enhance the performance of the charity.

Provide support and constructive challenge to the Executive team in the delivery of the charity’s agreed vision, mission, values, strategy, policies and procedures.

Develop and maintain strong relationships and communications with key stakeholders.

Who we’re looking for

Demonstrate a strong and visible passion to play a leading role in the setting and delivery of the charity’s key strategic objectives with a commitment to contributing to the continued success of the charity.

Demonstrate strong inter-personal and relationship building abilities and be comfortable in an ambassadorial role.

Demonstrate tact and diplomacy, with the ability to listen and engage effectively.

Strong networking capabilities with the ability to actively contribute to driving expanded future funding initiatives

Ability to create and develop a collaborative team environment.

Ability to commit time to conduct the role including travel and attending events out of office hours.

Experience of operating at a senior strategic leadership level within an organisation.

Successful track record of achievement through their career.

Significant experience of chairing meetings and events.

Experience of dealing with the media.

Strong leadership skills, ability to motivate staff and volunteers and bring people together.

Financial management expertise and a broad understanding of finance issues.

No previous experience of the third sector or understanding of blood cancer is required.

Time Required

The appointment is for a minimum three year term.

On average, a commitment of a maximum 2 days per month with 4 Trustees Meeting per annum.

The position does not offer remuneration or expenses.
