Job Description

Citizens Advice Bedford is looking for a Treasurer to join the board of trustees at an exciting time of growth and development. Working with the CEO and Lead Business Support Administrator the role of the Treasurer is to ensure that all the finances and the supporting financial control systems are kept in order. Day-to-day financial management and the maintaining of financial records are undertaken by the CEO and other colleagues.

As part of the National Citizens Advice network, bespoke support and training is available. Including board meetings (4 x year), we estimate total time commitment is no more than 45 hours a year.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Guiding and advising the board in the approval of budgets, accounts and financial statements, within a relevant financial policy framework
  • Advising on the financial implications of our strategic plans and key assumptions in the operational plan and annual budget
  • Understanding the accounting procedures and key internal controls to be able to assure the board that the charity's financial integrity is sound
  • Ensuring that a realistic budget is produced (with the CEO) which meets all the organisations needs and that there is an appropriate reserves policy
  • Monitoring the income and expenditure position, conducting quarterly P&L, balance sheet and written summary reports to the board at least quarterly, in a format accessible to the board members
  • Ensure proper financial procedures and controls are in place to safeguard resources
  • Ensuring that accounts are prepared at year-end in compliance with the SORP Accounting for Charities and making arrangements for them to be audited or independently examined, as required by the Charity Commission
  • Presenting the accounts at the AGM and drawing attention to important points in a coherent and understandable way

Personal skills and qualities

  • Financial qualifications or experience
  • Experience of using Quickbooks & IT literacy 
  • Knowledge of charity finance, full cost recovery, G1 & G2 (salary & overhead apportionment)
  • The ability to analyse proposals, financial liabilities and able to exercise good independent judgment 
  • Have good listening, verbal and written communication skills
  • Be able to explain complex financial information in an accessible way
  • Be willing to learn about and follow the Citizens Advice aims, principles and policies, including confidentiality and data protection
