Job Description

The role of Assistant Human Rights Officer at BIHR is a great opportunity for someone at the start of their career in human rights who can demonstrate a good understanding of UK law and a passion for both practical non-litigation based human rights work and experience-led policy work. This is a varied role which includes

  • Supporting the development of BIHR’s human rights information / educational resources and tools, including researching and drafting copy for our human rights guides and information tools, website and blog.
  • Supporting the development of BIHR’s programmes, training and educational/informational work, including generating training materials and other materials / resources for programmes.
  • Supporting the delivery of BIHR’s programmes, training and outreach through online delivery and where needed, face-to-face delivery.
  • Undertaking research and generating copy for BIHR’s policy and campaigning work, working with the RCA, and leading on specific assigned areas.

A passion for human rights in the UK is a must. A commitment to ensuring the best possible practical use of domestic standards outside the courts is essential. The AHRO is a very varied and exciting role for someone looking to begin a career in human rights in the UK.

Please note BIHR is a remote working organisation (with homeworking equipment provided). However, there is a required monthly full team meeting in London (N1) and the option for a once-a-week flexi-desk space (on rotation), also in London (N1).

Interview Process

Interviews will be online via Zoom; you must be able to use this platform (which is integral to the role itself). Interviews are likely to take place on Thursday 10th and Friday 11th February 2022. If you have not heard from us by Friday 4th February 2022, please note that you have not been shortlisted on this occasion. Due to the number of applications we receive, it is not possible for us to respond to all applicants; only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

Please note. We operate a rigorous selection process, based on various aspects of the role, to ensure candidates can demonstrate their suitability for the role, and have a comprehensive understanding of this varied and rewarding position.  The process consists of:

  • A prepared verbal communication task for you to present at the interview (max 10 mins)
  • A timed written task which you will be asked to complete within an agreed time slot prior to the interview (max 2-hour task)
  • An online interview with a panel with unseen questions, using Zoom (max. 90 mins)
  • Hogan Test (for more information, search online for Hogan Assessments)
