Job Description

Article 36 is a specialist not-for-profit organisation, focused on reducing harm from weapons. We are a small, respected and effective team of international advocacy and policy experts based in the UK. We partner with civil society groups and governments to develop new policies and legal standards to prevent civilian harm from existing and future weapons.

We are looking for two new board members to help oversee the organisations, ideally with legal, grant funding or policy and/or media and communications backgrounds.You will have an understanding of, and personal commitment to, the core values and objectives of the organisation.

Weapons and armed violence often disproportionately affect marginalised groups who continue to be under-represented in international policymaking; these groups include black people and other people of colour, women, LGBTQ+ people, people with disabilities and people of different faiths and beliefs. We believe in centring our work to include an understanding of how violence affects people differently, to assist communities impacted by violence, and to work in international and multicultural partnership with states and organisations to advance an equal, just, and peaceful future. Consequently, we are committed to diversifying our board and strongly encourage applications from people who can bring new and different ideas and perspectives to our work.

As a board member you will help set the strategic direction of the organisation, setting overall policy and evaluating performance, as well as overseeing a sustainable financial strategy.

Board members serve for a minimum of three years, and are expected to commit 4-6 days a year for board meetings in London, preparation, and to support the team if required in between meetings.

This is an unpaid, voluntary role, but we will meet travel, childcare or other reasonable costs to enable you to attend meetings in person or otherwise to facilitate access.
