Job Description

An opportunity for a finance professional to help guide a leading STEM education charity to inspire the next generation of engineers.

The Smallpeice Trust is an energetic and independent children’s education charity, founded in 1966 by Dr Cosby Smallpeice, a self-taught engineer. The Trust delivers interactive activities to encourage 8 – 18-year-olds to study STEM subjects and go onto a career in engineering.

Working collaboratively with partners and funders, the Trust aims to help to address the shortfall of engineers in the UK and create an engineering workforce more representative of the population. The Trust works with over 50,000 young people each year, from its base in Leamington Spa. A range of activity is delivered by a core staff team of around 35, led by CEO Dr Kevin P Stenson.

The Trust has an annual turnover of around £3m, with an endowment worth over £20m from the founder Dr Cosby Smallpeice. This provides financial stability in uncertain times and gives funds to invest alongside our partners in education programmes.

What will you be doing?

The role of a Trustee is to serve on the governing body of the charity, providing leadership direction and support to the CEO. It involves attendance at a quarterly Board meeting and participation in the Finance Sub Committee. Some meetings of the Trustees are held in Smallpeice Headquarters in Leamington Spa: others are held by video conference.

Trustees are ambassadors for Smallpeice so attend activities, such as courses and interviews, as well as positively representing the charity through their own roles. This is undertaken on a voluntary basis and is often an enjoyable part of being a Trustee, seeing the difference being made to young people’s lives.

The current Trustees offer a wide experience in engineering, teaching and administration to exercise their legal responsibilities of governance and setting strategy for the Trust. We are looking for a Trustee with finance / investment expertise to complement our existing skills base.

Successful candidates will need to show:

The Board is looking to appoint a Trustee with the following experience and qualities:

  • Experience in leading a finance function, ideally a Finance Director and qualified CA
  • Experience of operating in a charity setting.
  • Passion and commitment to encourage school children, especially from under-represented backgrounds, to study engineering

Trustees are initially appointed for a period of 5 years with the option to extend this by a further 5 years.

The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.
