Introduction from the Director of Education
I’m delighted you’re interested in becoming the Anne Frank Trust’s Education Development Manager. We’ve created this post to help us accelerate forward many key aspects of our Education Strategy in 2022. If appointed, you will joining a dedicated team of people who are inspired by Anne Frank, passionate about young people and committed to empowering them to challenge prejudice.
Anti-prejudice education is needed now more than ever. Covid has heightened social divisions, inequalities and conspiracy theories, and left thousands of young people feeling disempowered. Here at the Anne Frank Trust we have a 30-year record – and outstanding impact evidence – of empowering young people to speak out against all forms of bigotry, inspired by the uniquely moving story of Anne Frank.
Since the pandemic, we’ve become even more determined to reach the widest range of young people and make an even greater difference. We’ve launched a new education strategy that supplements our highly-regarded schools workshops with (i) live online learning events to engage hundreds of pupils, and (ii) a youth empowerment programme targeted at young people with lived experience of prejudice, offering them mentoring and a range of creative projects to sustain and enhance their anti-prejudice role.
We can’t wait to welcome you into our hard-working, fun-loving team. There are currently 19 staff members across the organisation. In person or online, we meet as a whole staff team on Tuesday afternoons, Our Education Team consists of myself, Two Assistant Directors, one for Schools & Communities and one for Youth Empowerment. There are a further seven Anne Frank workers who are responsible for our frontline delivery. Our Education Management Team meets fortnightly and is made up of myself, and the two Assistant Directors. You would be a vital member of this team. As well as an annual appraisal and monthly Support & Supervision with me, you will have access to external courses and independent coaching as required.
Our work
The Anne Frank Trust UK is an education charity that empowers 10 to 15-year-olds to challenge all forms of prejudice, inspired by the life and work of Anne Frank.
Founded in 1991 by friends of Anne’s father Otto, we are the UK education partner of the Anne Frank House Amsterdam.
In 2020, despite Covid restrictions, our education programmes reached nearly 14,000 young people in 163 schools across the country. Our starting point is always the life and work of Anne Frank, explored as a Jewish experience in the historical context of the Holocaust, and as insight and inspiration for understanding and challenging prejudice in all its forms today.
Our education programme has three strands:
- Online learning, including live events and downloadable resources, open to all schools.
- Schools programme, which has two elements: (a) workshops for whole class groups on such topics as antisemitism, gender inequality, homophobia, Islamophobia, online hatred and shared values; and (b) peer education, where we train young people to share their pro-equality message with others in their school by giving presentations based on the Diary or acting as guides to our pop-up exhibition Anne Frank: A History for Today.
- Youth empowerment programme, launching in 2022, targeted at young people with lived experience of prejudice or disadvantaged, mentoring them in an ongoing anti-prejudice role as Anne Frank Ambassadors, and engaging them in such opportunities as creative projects, a Youth Board to sit alongside our trustees, and a Media Team to engage in public debate about prejudice and diversity.
Through an ongoing research partnership with the Social Psychology Department at the University of Kent, we have robust evidence of our impact – for example that 97.2% of our participants become more positive in their attitudes to at least one other social group.
Our schools programme currently operates in Scotland and in five regions of England (London, the North East, the North West, the West Midlands, and Yorkshire). At least one of our frontline youth education officers, called “Anne Frank Workers”, works from home in each of these locations.
Of our turnover roughly £1.4 million, around a third comes from Government grants (e.g. from the Department for Education to tackle prejudice-based bullying), a third from an annual fundraising lunch held in Park Lane hotel around Holocaust Memorial Day in January, and a third from a range of trusts, foundations, sponsors and donations.
Our strategic and operational planning is organised around four areas: education, communications, fundraising and operations. Each of these areas is led by a member of the Senior Management Team and overseen by a relevant sub-committee of the board.
