Job Description

Volunteer Role Description for Treasurer

Approximately 1 in 8 people in the UK are unpaid carers (6.5 million), they support family members, friends or neighbours to live independently in their own home and enhance their lives through the support provided. Very often the caring responsibilities, although rewarding, can be detrimental to their own physical and mental health and financial situation. Carers Trust Heart of England supports Carers in Coventry and Warwickshire enabling them to continue in their caring role and look after themselves as well as the person they care for.

A Treasurer would be required to provide general financial oversight to ensure that tasks such as record keeping, the following of procedures, and reports, accounts, and audits are being completed efficiently and in accordance with the law.

Overall Responsibilities

  • Oversee the financial affairs of Carers Trust Heart of England and ensure they are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice.
  • Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures are in place.
  • Monitor and report on the financial health of Carers Trust Heart of England.
  • Oversee the production of necessary financial reports/returns, accounts and audits.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Liaise with relevant staff, committee members and/or volunteers to ensure the financial viability of Carers Trust Heart of England.
  • Make fellow committee members aware of their financial obligations and take a lead in interpreting financial data to them.
  • Regularly report the financial position at committee meetings (balance sheet, cash flow, fundraising performance etc).
  • Oversee the production of an annual budget and propose its adoption at the last meeting of the previous financial year.
  • Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures and controls are in place, i.e.:
    • Cheque signatories
    • Purchasing limits
    • Purchasing systems
    • Petty cash/float
    • Salary payments
    • Pensions
    • PAYE and NI payments
    • Others as appropriate
  • Appraising the financial viability of plans, proposals and feasibility studies.
  • Lead on appointing and liaising with auditors/an independent examiner.

Qualities

  • Knowledge and experience of current and fundraising finance practice relevant to voluntary and community organisations.
  • Knowledge of bookkeeping and financial management (as necessary).
  • Good financial analysis skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly.

Please note that when face-to-face meetings resume, some travel may be required as these meetings take place in Coventry. All meetings will abide by the latest Government guidelines. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.

Also, some availability will be required in evenings, typically from 4pm onwards, to attend Board meetings. These meetings are usually on Tuesdays, although there are other meetings you may be asked to attend.
