As Lay Advisory Group (LAG) Member you will be a crucial part of the governance of the College by providing advice from a lay perspective on the standards of care and training in Emergency Medicine. The LAG is primarily a lay, not patient, representative group.

The LAG has an advisory role and reports to the Council, upon which the Chair of the LAG also has a seat. The LAG currently has twelve members comprising people with non-medical expertise. In order to effectively represent the UK, we seek to appoint a national member from Northern Ireland.

Members should be passionate and motivated to help improve the quality of standards of care and training in Emergency Medicine, have an interest in the NHS and in the delivery of high standards of healthcare. It is important that Members have the confidence to work with a wide range of lay and clinical colleagues.

Membership of the Lay Group is not permitted to those who are or have been registered clinical practitioners

There are normally four LAG meetings per year and members will also be expected to serve on one or more College Committees usually held at the Royal College’s offices in London though currently these are taking place remotely.  As the Lay Member for Northern Ireland you will also attend meetings of the College’s Northern Ireland Board.. All members of the Committee are advised of the business to be transacted at any meeting even if they are unable to be present.

Currently the term of office for Members is three years, subject to a maximum service of two terms of office.

A selection panel is being formed for the application process and applicants will be short-listed and interviewed, with a full induction given upon appointment.

It is anticipated that you would be required to work for two days per month. Voluntary Member posts are not remunerated, but all expenses can be reimbursed in accordance with our expenses policy.

The Royal College of Emergency Medicine was established to advance education and research in Emergency Medicine. The College is responsible for setting standards of training and administering examinations in Emergency Medicine for the award of Fellowship and Membership of the College as well as recommending trainees for CCT in Emergency Medicine. The College works to ensure high quality care by setting and monitoring standards of care and providing expert guidance and advice on policy to relevant bodies on matters relating to Emergency Medicine.
