Job Description

Chair of Trustees - If you are passionate about access to justice join Support Through Court and help us extend the support we offer toLitigants in Person facing life changing challenges in Civil, Family and Tribunal Courts.

The major responsibility of the Chair is leadership:  to make sure that the charity complies with its purpose and with the relevant legal requirements.

The Chair is not only the figurehead, leading communication both within the charity and to the outside world, but also the guardian of purpose, strategy, policy, values and controls.

Most importantly, the Chair is leader of the team, with direct responsibility for the trustee body and for the Chief Executive and the last resort in times of crisis.

There is no essential background. We have a diverse team of trustees with a range of experience, but there are clear priorities in the skills and experience of the new Chair we are seeking:

  • A strong and demonstrable commitment to the principles of social justice
  • The ability and willingness to commit the time necessary to deal with the range of issues that the Chair will face (usually several days a month)
  • Dealing with people: whether in harnessing the skills and experience of colleagues and team members, chairing meetings or dealing with complaints or problems.
  • The ability to thrive as the figurehead and act as ambassador for the charity.
  • Sound strategic thinking: a clear mind, the ability to consider both the big picture and the details of any issue, and the judgement to consider all factors in reaching decisions.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills: the readiness and ability to represent the charity both internally and externally.
  • Strong leadership experience and ability, more than likely stemming from experience in leading a senior team or teams, whether in a professional, charity, commercial or other context.
  • The ability to lead and motivate the trustee team, drawing out their individual strengths, skills and experience.

Helpful but not essential

Any of the following could also be helpful:

  • Some experience in the charity sector
  • An understanding of the legal duties and liabilities of being a trustee (likely gained through previous experience of serving as a trustee).
  • Some knowledge of the legal profession.
  • Some familiarity with finance and fundraising.

The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.
