About INQUEST

Founded in 1981, INQUEST is the only charity in England and Wales providing expertise on contentious deaths and their investigation to bereaved people, lawyers, other advice and support agencies, media, parliamentarians and the general public. Our range of cases includes custody and detention, multi-agency failings or where wider issues of state and corporate accountability are in question, such as with Hillsborough and Grenfell. 

About the role

The Senior Policy and Parliamentary Officer role will be key to INQUEST’s work in influencing policy and pushing for change in areas relating to detention, criminal justice, mental health, accountability and human rights. The parliamentary aspect of the role will focus on the Public Authority (Accountability) Bill (Hillsborough Law) and pushing for the creation of a National Oversight Mechanism. 

Line managed by the Head of Policy, the post-holder will be part of a small but dynamic team that works to ensure the experiences of bereaved families are central to strengthening policy and challenging the systems and structures that have failed them. The role will have a specific focus on developing relationships with Parliament and parliamentarians with a view to achieving our campaign demands and organisational objectives.

We are looking for an experienced policy professional with knowledge of the policy landscape in at least some of the above areas, and quick to learn in others. They should have excellent understanding of the workings of Parliament. The post holder must be an excellent communicator, with accurate and persuasive writing and analytical skills. They should be able to identify opportunities to influence, and balance a reactive and proactive workload.

Due to the Covid-19 public health crisis, the role will initlially be home based. It will then be based in our office in Finsbury Park, North London.
