Job Description

Chair – Mary Ward Settlement

We are seeking an innovative Chair, committed to growing a vibrant and successful charity which has been dedicated for over a century to fighting inequalities through justice and education.The Chair will have the experience to steer the strategic development of the organisation in close collaboration with the CEO and senior management team. We are seeking people with enthusiasm, good interpersonal skills, and experience at a senior level in business or education or public sector organisations who are prepared to use their experience and skills and leadership to achieve the objectives of the Settlement. The organisation is poised for expansion with the opening of a new centre in Stratford, East London in mid - 2022. An interest in the role of creativity and the arts in education and in bringing together communities around a common interest is important.It is a perfect time to take the organisation to the next stage of development from a strong base and with a dynamic and experienced board and CEO. The board aims to appoint a new chair to start in mid - 2021.

The Board recognises that diversity of leadership is vital if we are to operate with excellence.  We actively encourage applications from people from BAME backgrounds, disabled people, people with experience of disadvantage and people with different perspectives, life experiences and backgrounds. 

The Board normally meets 6 times a year. The role is a voluntary one but reasonable expenses to attend Board meetings are reimbursed.

Key attributes for Chair role:

  • Experience of being on or chairing a charity board
  • Strategic leadership experience
  • Understanding of working with vulnerable communities
  • Understanding of financial management and accounting 
  • Experience of large scale projects - particularly property
  • Ideally, some commercial and marketing background 
  • Broad experience of management senior teams
