Job Description

We are The Friendly Almshouses (we're almshouses and we're...well, friendly!). We are now recruiting to our Board of Trustees to help us govern, grow and develop our charity, which provides almshouse accommodation for women in need. We are particualrly intertested in enhancing our skills and experience at Board level in the areas of fundraising, marketing, housing/property management, legal and digital. If you are interested, read on...

The Friendly Almshouses is a registered charity based in Brixton, SW9.  Founded as the ‘Friendly Female Society’ in 1802, it has provided for women in housing need for nearly 200 years.  In 2015 we became a Company limited by guarantee.

An extensive refurbishment programme, bringing our accommodation up to 21st century standards, is underway and due for completion in early 2021.  Currently, we have sixteen residents ranging in age from their mid-fifties to 79; at full capacity we shall have twenty studio flats.  Our residents live in a sheltered community that is supported by the Clerk to the Trustees, and a non-resident warden.

We are now recruiting trustees to join us as we move into a new phase in the charity’s history.  As a charity founded and managed ‘by women for women’, we would like to hear particularly from women interested in becoming a Trustee (which also means becoming a Director of the Company).  The ethnic and cultural mix of our community is highly diverse, and our Trustee body needs to better reflect this. Our Chairman is expecting to step down within a year, and so we are also interested in hearing from those with relevant experience who could be appointed with a view to taking on this role in due course.
