Job Description

The Alex Ferry Foundation is a unique philanthropic charity established in January 2019. The Foundation was created with an endowment of millions of pounds from the 35 Hour Week Campaign Fund, set up by trades unions in the 1990s to campaign for a shorter working week.  Many thousands of individual union members paid an hour’s wage each week into the Fund to support the campaign and this collective spirit drives our actions and our ethos. We aim to improve the lives of workers, former workers and their families in shipbuilding, engineering and related communities across the UK.  We will promote the wellbeing of individuals and living well in communities.

The Deputy Director will have a broad set of responsibilities with the key role to develop, commission and oversee the Foundation’s research and policy programme. Build the charity’s reputation and capability; Advocate for the Foundation and its policies; Forge partnerships to bring trade unions and civil society closer; Liaise with the Confederation of Shipbuilding & Engineering Unions (CSEU) and its affiliated trades unions.

The successful candidate will have a background in promoting ‘good work’. Excellent communication skills and teamwork. An ability to multi-task in a rapidly evolving environment. A strong affinity with both the values of philanthropy and the UK labour movement which made the Foundation possible. This is a new post. Based in central London. The post will involve travel within the UK. The post-holder will report to the Director who is also the General Secretary of the CSEU.
