Job Description

Do you want to use your skills and experience to help groups of local disabled people come together and make real, meaningful change happen? Do you want to work at the forefront of effective coproduction, not just consultation or engagement?

Real is the only user-led organisation in Tower Hamlets that supports disabled people across the borough of all impairment types, all age groups, all ethnicities and all other protected characteristics.

Being user-led is fundamental to who we are, and what we do, which is why our tagline is “Disabled people working together for real choices”. We are deeply rooted in the history of the disability rights movement, whose slogan “Nothing about us, without us” led to disabled people taking control of their future, because they knew what they needed to achieve equality.

What makes us “Real”

Our vision

Real’s vision is of an equal and diverse society free from the barriers that stop disabled people from living their lives the way they want.

Our mission

Real’s mission is to protect and uphold the human rights of disabled people in Tower Hamlets, and overcome discrimination, to enable disabled people to live as equal citizens.

We aim to help disabled people to live independently - where they choose, how they want, with all the support they need, and with the money they need to do it.

The name “Real” is not an acronym, but it does stand for the real jobs, real education, real incomes, real choices, and real participation in society that all disabled people deserve.

Real does not exist to give disabled people jobs at Real, but we do recognise that having disabled employees and volunteers is one of our strengths because we are more likely to connect and have empathy with the people that we are supporting through shared experience.

You can find out more information about Real in our information pack.

More information about the role

Real has been at the forefront of developing good practice in coproduction, locally and nationally. Coproduction is much more than engagement and requires particular skills and ways of working to enable people to contribute to their maximum. In the information pack you will find more information about the role, together with a detailed job description and person specification.

Communities Driving Change

As part of this role you will be working on the Tower Hamlets Communities Driving Change (CDC) programme; a radical community development approach to public health which supports local people to:

  • Determine what matters most to them in terms of their health and wellbeing
  • Design and deliver interventions which draw on the tools of grassroots community development and social innovation
  • Influence existing services and systems to be more responsive to the needs and lived experiences of local communities

This project has been running since October 2017, and has been commissioned by Tower Hamlets Council’s Public Health Department as part of their flagship Health and Wellbeing strategy. It is due to run for another 2-3 years, led by four consortiums across the borough.

Working in the northwest of the borough, you will usually be working remotely with the lead programme partner The Young Foundation. Often working from their offices in Bethnal Green, you will be working with the CDC delivery team, programme partners FutureGov, local residents and stakeholders - coordinating work streams in and around the Collingwood Estate. This involves working with communities on their public health priorities, from resident-led exercise classes to green space redevelopment initiatives.

CDC is a high energy programme which works in a bottom-up, agile way to respond to the changing energy and contexts of communities. It is centred on co-production, building relationships, connecting people with the tools, skills and services they need to affect change. As Real’s representative on the programme, you will lead on ensuring disability awareness is at the forefront of the programme, and act as the link between programme partners. A key part of the role will be supporting disabled people with visible and invisible impairments to participate equally within the project.

As a user-led organisation of disabled people seeking to represent the collective voice of our constituency, it’s important that we employ people who can engage effectively with the community that we are working with. For this position having a disability or long-term health condition, and/or speaking a local community language, would be an asset.

Full-time equivalency

We are open minded and our key objective is to recruit someone as soon as possible. We know that many people prefer part-time roles.

We need to recruit to replace a 0.6 FTE (3 days a week) position that has become vacant. This person was working exclusively on the Communities Driving Change project.

But we will also need to recruit for two other forthcoming new projects. This is why we are open-minded about the full-time equivalent of the person that we are recruiting and why the application form asks you to set out your minimum, maximum and ideal full-time equivalent.

We will therefore consider applications from individuals who want to work anywhere between 0.6 FTE and 1.0 FTE. You should therefore indicate in your application your preference for minimum, maximum and ideal FTE that you would like to work.

Language skills

The two main community languages spoken in Tower Hamlets are Bengali/Sylheti and Somali. We would love it if we could recruit someone who is a speaker of one of these languages.

Timetable

The initial deadline for applications is 9 am on Wednesday 4 September, with interviews on Monday 9, Wednesday 11 or Friday 13 September.

This is an exciting time to join a successful and growing Disabled People’s Organisation and really make a difference. We look forward to receiving your application forms.
