Job Description

Southwark Cathedral is very fortunate to have a large, highly skilled and committed volunteer workforce of almost 500 individuals. They give generously of their time and skills to enrich and extend the work of the Cathedral and its service to the local community.  This new role has been created to support this large group of volunteers and to be a link between them and the Cathedral’s management team.

You will provide a vital role in assisting volunteer groups with recruitment and management in line with the principles of the Volunteer Charter to which the Cathedral is a signatory, providing a managerial and pastoral focus and celebrating and thanking those who volunteer. You will also organise and deliver training in volunteer skills and help to build Southwark Cathedral as a centre of good practice in volunteering. You will specifically line-manage the Welcomers Team who are responsible for delivering the Cathedral’s “Ministry of Welcome” to visitors.

We are looking for someone with exceptional inter-personal skills, able to deal effectively with people from all backgrounds and of all abilities, excellent negotiation skills and able to handle difficult situations with calmness, professionalism and maturity. Experience of working with, and managing, volunteers and leading a team as well as being a good self-starter with initiative and drive will be essential.
