Trustees
bloodwise

Job Description

We are seeking three new Trustees who want to use their experience and expertise to help us beat blood cancer and change the world for blood cancer patients.

About Bloodwise

Bloodwise funds research and provides support to all those affected by blood cancer. Blood cancer is the 3rd biggest cancer killer and the 5th most common cancer, claiming more lives than either breast or prostate cancer.

Since 1960 Bloodwise (formerly Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research) has invested £500 million in research which has significantly contributed to the transformation in survival from blood cancers. Now 70% of people diagnosed with blood cancer can expect to survive for 5 years or more, and this means that we also focus on helping patients to live well with and beyond their blood cancer.

Our vision is to beat blood cancer and our mission is to stop people from dying, to make patients’ lives better and to stop blood cancers from happening in the first place.

Our Governance

Over the last 3 years we have been shaping and developing our Board. This began with the appointment of our Chairman, Pelham Allen, who joined us in 2013. Pelham was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma is 2000 and has a passionate desire to improve outcomes for cancer patients and their experience of treatment. Since then we have also added expertise in strategic communications, digital start-ups and strategic financial management. There are currently 8 Board members including the Chair and Treasurer. Following a recent skills and diversity audit we are now seeking to appoint 3 further Trustees.

We are particularly seeking people who can help the Board in making decisions about the furtherance of our charitable purpose and the evaluation of its impact, through one of the following areas of knowledge and experience:

  • significant experience and knowledge of medical research (not necessarily blood cancer)
  • clinical experience and knowledge of the complex health sector and policy environment
  • charity sector experience, ideally with professional fundraising experience

We're looking to recruit people from right across the age spectrum, from a wide range of experiences and backgrounds and we encourage interest from individuals whose lives have been affected by cancer. Bloodwise invests in research and carries out fundraising and volunteering activities throughout the UK and so we are also keen that regional and ethnic diversity is represented on our Board.

If you believe you have skills developed from your professional life combined with the energy, commitment and drive to make a difference and bring a new perspective we are keen to hear from you.
