Job Description

Making a Difference Locally (MADL) is a registered charitable foundation established by Nisa Retail with an annual income of c£1.2m.  Nisa, a member-owned buying organisation and Symbol group operating in the convenience sector, represents over 1,200 retailers operating over 3,000 stores in the UK with a turnover last year of £1.6bn.

The charity aspires to be the UK’s leading national charity for local communities; in 2014 it donated nearly £1m to almost 1,300 different small charities and good causes across the UK.

We are seeking voluntary independent Trustees who can bring a wealth of experience to the Board as the charity goes through a considerable period of change.  We need strategic thinkers who can determine a charitable strategy then help lead the small team to deliver it, whilst applying independent judgement, speak their minds and work effectively on a Board with other Trustees, including the corporate Trustees from Nisa Retail.  You must feel confident contributing to the strategic development of an organisation as it looks forward to increased income and offering additional support for community activities.

If your aspirations match those of this small but ambitious charity and you believe you can offer any of the following then we’d love to hear from you.

  • Charity knowledge and experience

  • Fundraising experience

  • Charity management

  • Charity law

  • Financial management

  • A sound understanding of charity governance

  • A sound understanding of what is required to be a Trustee

  • Experience of developing a philanthropic culture

This is an unpaid position however the charity will pay reasonable expenses.

Time commitments: Trustees meet in Scunthorpe every two months during office hours.  They will also be asked to support the executive team in delivery of the charity’s objectives and are asked to approve all by email donations at least twice per month.  Overall, the time commitment required should not exceed one half day per calendar month. Trustees are appointed for up to two terms of three years.
