We aim to prevent people with poor credit references being exploited by the incredibly high interest options available to them.

Opportunity description

We are looking for a qualified accountant or equivalent to oversee the finances of the Credit Union and help ensure we address financial exclusion in West Sussex and Surrey through the provision of ethical financial services.

The role

We are looking for a volunteer Treasurer who can provide a range of skills including

1. Financial overview to supervise the finance officer on behalf of the Board
2. Treasury management to maximise income from capital
3. Financial contribution to the strategic planning of the Credit Union
4. Make fellow Board members aware of their financial obligations and take a lead in interpreting financial data for them
5. Ensure the finances of the Credit Union meet all Regulatory and Statutory requirements
6. Lead on appointing auditors
7. Oversee the production of annual and three year financial plans and explain and recommend these to the Board.

The Board comprises around 12 places although this is flexible depending on expertise.  The Board meets at least 10 times per year rotating between Worthing and Guilford on the afternoon of the 4th Tuesday in the month.  An Executive Committee meets on the previous Tuesday at Worthing to scrutinise financial and other reports in fuller detail.  The Executive currently comprises the Chair, Vice Chairs (2), the Treasurer and the HR Director.

The credit union has a full time General Manager, a full time Head of Business Development and Marketing and a part time Finance Officer, all of whom attend the Executive and the Board if required.

You will become part of a friendly and outgoing Board of Directors which believes passionately in the good that the credit union can do within its local community (stretching to 2 million people), where everyone has a contribution to make based on their life and professional experiences. You will join us at an exciting time of our development following the recent merger of the West Sussex Credit Union with Surrey Save Credit Union and the expansion of our services throughout the new common bond area.
