Enterprise Development Lead
the connection at st. martin-in-the-fields

Job Description

The Connection at St. Martins is based in the heart of London, near Charing Cross Station and Trafalgar Square. CSTM has been helping homeless people since the First World War and is one of London’s largest homelessness charities. CSTM helps 4,200 people each year through services for rough sleepers and people who are vulnerably housed, with an annual turnover of £4.4m, a staff team of 80 and around 50 regular volunteers.

Our new strategy from April 2018 included our aim to develop as an “enterprising charity”. To achieve this, we anticipate growing our existing trading from 1% of our income to 5% by 2023 through a combination of on-line sales and unlocking the potential offered by our site which is close to Charing Cross Station and Trafalgar Square. CSTM has a high profile as a result of long standing support from the BBC Radio 4 Christmas Appeal and sound financial footing with significant independence from statutory funding.

We are looking for an experienced social entrepreneur who can:

  • Create a portfolio of businesses which will grow our existing trading from 1% of our income to 5% by 2023
  • Work closely with the St Martins trading arm to take forward an exciting Courtyard café partnership
  • Work alongside our existing employability service to support clients within the emerging businesses
  • Manage an efficient, focused and a highly effective team to deliver business development growth in food sales, gardening and commercially viable artwork
  • Build the capacity and skills of the wider organisation to work in a more “enterprising” way

This role requires someone who can demonstrate their success in developing trading either within a charity, or similar experience within the commercial sector alongside an understanding of charities through volunteering. Whilst specific experience of trading within baking/café supplies, art work, on-line trading or gardening is advantageous, it is not essential. Our key focus is on appointing a credible, well organised and focused manager with experience of successful business growth which is transferable into our charitable setting.
