Job Description

Do you want to work for an established and respected local Mental Health Charity?

Solent Mind is the leading mental health charity across Hampshire providing a range of high quality services to improve people’s mental wellbeing and to promote choice and rights to everyone who needs our support.  Our services operate in various locations throughout the Hampshire area.

Solent Mind provide Southampton, Portsmouth and Hampshire’s specialist Mental Health Advocacy service.

When people use mental health services they often feel that that they are not listened to and that their real wishes are ignored at a time when they may be at their most vulnerable.

The role of an Advocate is to work with individual clients according to their thoughts, wishes and beliefs to ensure they are listened to and that their rights are upheld.

We are recruiting for a Qualified Independent Mental Health Advocate (IMHA), full time 37 hours a week

As an IMHA, based at Ravenswood House Medium Secure Hospital covering Forensic and other Inpatient units, you will:

  • Help safeguard the rights of service users, under mental health law and as citizens
  • Empower service users to make informed decisions about their care and treatment and take greater control over their lives
  • Support service users to have their views heard & represent their views if the service user can’t represent themselves

This role is an important safeguard for many people subject to detention in the acute hospitals across the region and with Community Treatment Orders.

You will need to have demonstrable experience of working with vulnerable people, preferably with mental health needs and the ability to work with a variety of other professionals.  In addition you will need to have the Independent Mental Health Advocacy NVQ and be prepared to complete the other advocacy modules of the National Advocacy Qualification.

This is an opportunity for someone to continue their personal development within Advocacy.
