Civic space consultant
publish what you pay

Job Description

Publish What You Pay (PWYP) is the leading global network of civil society organisations working for transparency and accountability in the oil, gas and mining sector. Since PWYP was established in 2002, the global network has grown to over 700 member organisations all over the world including human rights, development, environmental and faith-based groups. The global network is coordinated by a small, decentralised Secretariat, which is a registered charity in England and Wales.

The growing trend of a shrinking of civic space across the world is an issue experienced by many PWYP members, making civil society engagement in natural resource governance increasingly difficult. A key strength of the PWYP network is the collective power of our members to support each other in the struggle for more equitable governance of natural resources. When PWYP members experience restrictions on their civic space, the PWYP Secretariat and PWYP governing bodies do their best to support our members and coordinate responses in these challenging times.

PWYP is looking for a consultant to build on PWYP’s existing systems, knowledge and partnerships and be responsible for developing a new long-term approach to counteracting the impacts of closing civic space on PWYP members. In times of crises, the consultant would help orchestrate a coordinated, timely and effective response. This includes alerting the global network if/when cases arise, following the evolution on the ground, coordinating responses by the members and liaising with key stakeholders, helping ensure coherent legal, media, fundraising and advocacy plans to ensure national and global responses are mutually supportive and developing systems for PWYP to better learn and respond to these issues in the future.
