Trustee
public law project

Job Description

PLP has seen significant growth over the last two years; its profile and impact are growing. There is an increased need for our work and this is an exciting time for us.  This recruitment round offers prospective trustees a great opportunity to develop their strategic and governance skills in a collaborative, dynamic environment.

Our impact is wide and felt by thousands of people who have benefited from robust defense of the rule of law.  We have successfully led legal challenges to Government restrictions on legal aid and interventions on other issues including benefits reform, migrants’ rights and disability discrimination.

In recent years we have won a Guardian Charity of the Year Award (2012) and Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year ‘Outstanding Achievement’ Award (2015). Most recently, we were shortlisted in the Financial Times Innovative Lawyer Awards 2018.

Appointment of new trustees

PLP’s work is carried out by a committed team of staff and volunteers, supported by our Board of Trustees. We are currently seeking to expand our Board through the appointment of 4 to 6 new trustees with a diversity of skills, experiences and background.

We are particularly keen to appoint trustees with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Accounting
  • Campaigning
  • Chairing discussions at board level or in leadership teams
  • Charity law
  • Change management
  • Corporate fundraising
  • Corporate law
  • Experience of challenging public decisions that affect you personally (either as an individual claimant or as part of a group or campaign)
  • Individual donor fundraising
  • Public law

We welcome applications from outside and within the legal community. You may currently hold a senior charity of corporate sector role. You may be connected to a community organisation that has used the services of PLP or would qualify to use its services.

Time commitment

We would expect Trustees to be willing and able to commit around one day per month to trustee duties. Trustees must regularly attend PLP Trustee Board meetings. These take place every quarter on weekday evenings in Central London. Meetings last 2 to 3 hours.

Trustees are required to commit additional time to PLP to support the organisation through pre-reading for board meetings and contributing to specific projects, events or committees.

Application process

To apply, please send a CV and covering letter explaining why you wish to become a trustee at PLP and the skills and experience that you would bring to the role.  Please ensure that your covering letter addresses the essential and additional criteria of the person specification, which you will find in the application pack below, as applications will be shortlisted against these criteria. Applications should be no longer than 4 pages, in total. Applicants are also required to complete our equality monitoring form, below.  This will be anonymised and stored separately from your application.

If you require further information or would like an informal discussion about your application with one of our existing trustees, please contact Chris Igoe (complete an application or visit our website for contact information).
