Volunteer Development Manager
open doors

Job Description

Volunteer Development Manager (full-time) £28-33K

Open Doors is a dynamic and growing international Christian charity that serves the needs of the persecuted church – needs that are growing every day. Research for the Open Doors World Watch List shows that persecution against Christians is increasing, with believers in many countries experiencing violence, hostility and abuse for their faith.

Part of Open Doors response is to raise awareness amongst the church in the UK and Ireland, and one of the most effective ways we can do that is through a passionate team of volunteers.  We are looking for someone with vision and skill to increase the depth and breadth of our investment into our current volunteers and to lead on significantly expanding the team.

Our volunteers are a vital part of both our Open Doors team and our success in growing support for the persecuted church.  They have a passion to serve and we want to make their experience of working for us amazing through ensuring excellent communication, effective processes, and appreciation for all that they are and do.

We are looking for a Volunteer Development Manager* to make this a reality: someone who can communicate and inspire vision, motivate people and develop a team, solve problems (designing systems and processes to maximise the time, energy and passion of our volunteers) creating and managing a positive volunteering experience from start to finish.

The role includes: recruiting, training and developing volunteers and developing strong working relationships with them.  You will need to be able to build good relationships externally with churches and networks through which to engage new volunteers.  You will also need to build good relationships internally to fully utilise the expertise and resources that we have. Creativity will be useful as you think of new and innovative ways to do all these things. You’ll need strong IT skills, organisational talent, determination, and a high level of emotional intelligence.

Great things about this role:

  • It is a core role in our strategic development, offering great opportunity for influence and ownership.
  • It is a varied and evolving role providing the opportunity to achieve job satisfaction through improving systems and processes and developing people.
  • It is a collaborative role working with talented and motivated people in project planning, marketing, communications, strategic relations, HR, church relations, and events.
  • It is a team role, forming positive relationships with our volunteers: a diverse bunch of people with a massive heart for the church, a strong work ethic, and a great sense of fun.
  • It is an inspirational role, contributing to something that makes a difference in this world: bringing people hope, purpose and encouragement.
  • It is a developmental role, working for a dynamic Christian organisation that will support your career and personal development.
