Northamptonshire Carers is a voluntary organisation, registered charity and network partner of the Carers Trust, supporting informal carers countywide.  We wish to appoint motivated, committed and flexible individual(s) to join our Carer Support Worker (CSW) team based at Kettering General Hospital.

Full time – 37 hours per week or consider job share / part time hours.

Full time equivalent salary of £20,452 PA paid pro rata.

Responsible to: Senior Carer Support Worker.

The successful applicant/s will be expected to support unpaid Carers by managing a varied caseload. This will involve supporting patient discharges, providing Carers Assessments, advice, information and emotional support. The role is to be carried out mainly within the hospital setting. However it may including Carers homes and through our telephone Carers Support Line.

The post requires an individual who has an understanding of Carers needs and issues. Previous experience of working in a hospital, health, social care or voluntary sector setting, is desirable. However training and support will be provided.

Job Description – Carer Support Worker

Hospital Carers Support Worker’s (CSW’s) are expected to support unpaid Carers of patients who have been admitted to Kettering General Hospital, by managing a varied caseload. This involves supporting with patient discharges, providing Carers Assessments, advice, information and emotional support (including around end of life) and liaising with professionals, in order to enable the sustainment of the caring role, reduce the impact of caring on carer’s health and wellbeing and to prevent crisis.  The role is to be carried out mainly within the hospital setting. However it may including carers or patients homes and through our telephone Carers Support Line. 

The post requires an individual who has an understanding of Carers needs and issues. Previous experience of being in a caring role, working in a hospital, health, social care or voluntary sector setting, is desirable. However training and support will be provided.

By ‘carers’ we are referring to informal carers who look after a friend or family member with a disability or long term illness out of  a sense of duty and compassion as opposed to a care worker who is employed in their role. 


Job Dimensions

1. To provide an informed and professional response to carers through a confidential service of carer-centred assessment, support and crisis planning. To work across a variety of settings including the two local acute Kettering and Northampton General hospitals, Northamptonshire Carers’ offices, carers’ and patients homes. To provide input to carers and patients, through a variety of methods including by telephone, email and face to face contact. This will normally be within the county of Northamptonshire unless in agreement on a case-by-case basis.

2. To work regularly as part of a rota system providing information and support to carers through Northamptonshire Carers’ Support Line.

To manage a diverse, complex and fluctuating caseload of carers and patient discharges.  It is the worker’s responsibility to maintain this caseload at a manageable level (with Team Leader support). To work to action plans with identified timescales and targets. Whilst supporting carers it is important to take an empowering and preventative approach in order to promote independence and improve the sustainability of the caring role as appropriate.

3. To undertake developmental tasks and carer awareness-raising as required. This may include being involved with fund-raising, however this will be discussed with the worker on a case-by-case basis. 

4. To maintain accurate written and computer records in accordance with local policies and data protection and confidentiality legislation.

5. To work as part of a team, participating in team meetings, team building, training and activities. 

6. To prepare for and participate in regular supervision meetings and to seek additional supervision as required.

7. To demonstrate awareness/understanding of equal opportunities and other people’s behavioural, physical, social and welfare needs.

8. To ensure that reasonable care is taken at all times for the health, safety and welfare of yourself and other persons, and to comply with the policies and procedures relating to health and safety and safeguarding within the organisation.

9. To carry out any other duties which fall within the broad spirit, scope and purpose of this job description and which are commensurate with the grade of the post.
