Job Description

As part of our More Effective Working Families programme, we have identified a role for a senior finance person, to be responsible for ensuring that our financial function is effective and efficient and for instilling a financial mind-set throughout the organisation. 

Our Financial Controller works three days a week and is responsible for all day to day financial functions – Sage, payments, preparation of management accounts, VAT etc.  In management terms, her role is mainly backward looking.  This new role will be mainly forward looking, proactive and focused on what Working Families should do not what it has done: a commercial or funds-focused approach v compliance.

The Finance Director will work with the CEO and Senior Management Team (SMT), and will:

  • understand the overall finance picture and provide challenge and insight

  • set, guide and manage strategic and annual planning processes to ensure they are accurate but stretching

  • identify and manage key success factors and KPIs and build a culture of accountability and delivery 

  • understand income drivers and mix to maximise our income position

  • review and where necessary refine or introduce new financial systems and processes

We anticipate 1.5 - 2 days per month will be required – to include monthly SMT meetings, Finance Committee calls, monthly prep with CEO and Financial Controller to deliver management accounts, four half days pa to attend meetings of Board of Trustees plus support around annual budget setting (May-July).

This role will suit someone with a strong background in finance, who has carried out an FD role or equivalent and who ideally has had experience of two out of three of the charity, corporate and small business sectors.

This is a freelance or consultancy role, and we expect to agree an appropriate daily rate with the successful candidate.
