Job Description

The Humane League UK is seeking an experienced self-motivated individual to ensure all aspects of daily operations and finances of The Humane League UK (THL UK) run effectively and efficiently. They will ensure that the strategic and business objectives as well as the values of THL UK are put into practice. In conjunction with other members of staff they will provide a  high quality support to the organisation to ensure future growth, stability and success.

The Finance & Operations Manager will be responsible for managing the accounting, budgeting, payroll (including pensions), HR, logistics and administrative functions in collaboration with the Managing Director and other team members. This is an exciting opportunity for a high calibre professional looking to make an impact in the sector.

Reporting to the Managing Director UK and coordinating with Vice-President, Operations US.

The key focus of the role will be:

  • Maintain and improve the operational systems, processes, and policies in support of THL’s mission
  • Implement, maintain and manage an effective system of controls throughout THL covering human resources as well as financial controls
  • Manage THL budgeting in coordination with the Managing Director
  • Organise and deliver charity status documents, gift aid processing, and reporting.
  • Procure merchandise, manage inventory and distribution
  • Ensure safety, security, and integrity of all operations

Primary duties include:

  • Oversees all aspects of management and operations:
    • Charity administration
      • Maintain charitable status, ensuring all charity laws are followed
      • Manage charity documents and ensure filing in a timely manner
      • Handle organisation's correspondence
      • Develop organisational policies, standard operating procedures and general guidelines where necessary
      • Research and purchase insurance policies
    • Financial Management
      • Maintain financial accounts and ensure overall financial discipline
      • Reconcile expense reports
      • Control archive of financial statements
      • Process Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable
      • Manage cardholders and activity
      • Prepare financial reports
      • Assist in creating budgets
      • File any necessary tax reports, charity commission end of year reports and payments
    • Human Resources
      • Ensure all employment laws are followed
      • Maintain secure staff records
      • Facilitate onboarding and offboarding
      • Mediate conflict as needed
      • Process payroll
      • Lead by example with a strong work ethic
      • Nurture a cooperative and professional working environment
      • Ensure safety, security, and integrity of all operations
    • Donor Management
      • System administrator for donor database
      • Process gift aid
      • Coordinate printing of solicitations and printed materials
      • Assist Development as needed
    • Material Assets
      • Maintain contracts and leases
      • Procure merchandise, manage inventory and distribution
      • Ensures staff are fully equipped for optimal performance

Skills Required

  • A minimum of 5 years relevant experience.
  • Experience with budgeting, Google Spreadsheets and Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with accounting and associated software.
  • Strong working knowledge of UK charity and employment law (including pensions).
  • Previous experience with gift aid
  • Excellent analyticalproblem-solvinglving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Exceptional organisational skills, including attention to detail and the ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to work on own initiative, meeting objectives and tight deadlines under pressure
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Desirable

  • Good knowledge of employee benefit schemes
  • Knowledge of farm animal protection issues
  • Previous work with an animal welfare/rights organisation

This is a full-time, remote position based in the United Kingdom. Starting salary £33,000 per annum.
