Job Description

The Director of Finance will contribute to the development and delivery of The Retreat’s strategy and provide financial leadership and advice to the trustees, the CEO and the Leadership Team.

About The Retreat:

The Retreat is a charitable, not-for-profit provider of specialist mental healthcare services, located in the stunning City of York, North Yorkshire. Being well established and highly respected, the organisation works closely with the NHS to provide services for people with complex and challenging needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain regular liaison with the Chair of the Finance and Resources Committee and the Chair of the Audit Committee
  • Develop a strategic financial agenda, using plans and forecasting scenarios.
  • Provide clear timely relevant management accounts and key historic data.
  • Provide operationally relevant day to day financial data including cash flow and key performance indicators.
  • Manage the annual planning, budgeting and reporting processes and timetables, including the annual review and preparation of long term financial projections aligned to achieving The Retreat’s strategic objectives.
  • Support and train colleagues to ensure they have the confidence to proactively engage with the financial agenda and are empowered to contribute to the management of the finances of The Retreat as a whole, and their team in particular.
  • Ensure that The Retreat’s approach to financial risk management is fit for purpose and to lead the regular review and reporting of risk and the development of a robust assurance framework.
  • Ensure that proper financial procedures and control systems are documented and maintained and that all financial matters are dealt with in a proper and secure manner.
  • Ensure that that The Retreat meets all its statutory and other reporting and other obligations (including, but not exclusively, accountabilities to Companies House, Charity Commission, HMRC, Care Quality Commission, CQUIN and the Mental Health Act Commission and under the Data Protection Act).
  • Ensure that all income due is promptly collected and monies owed are paid in a prompt and efficient manner.
  • Oversee and manage the processing of payroll and pension arrangements.
  • Ensure that appropriate tax planning is undertaken
  • Support the Board on the development, and implementation of The Retreat’s investment and treasury strategy.
  • Lead the development and implementation of the IT strategy.

Candidate Skills and Experience Required:

  • Experience of working in the Charity sector, NHS or other public sector organisation is seen as being an essential requirement
  • CCAB qualified accountant with at least five years post qualification experience
  • Knowledge of the legal and financial framework affecting charities and businesses, to include: accounting standards, the Charities SORP, the Charities Act, Charity Commission regulations, company law, taxation, VAT and basic contract law
  • At least five years’ experience of working as part of a senior management team, participating in strategic decision making
  • Proven experience of managing teams and consultants
  • Proven track record of managing a payroll
  • Experience of developing and implementing an investment strategy
  • Project management skills to run strategic projects on behalf of the organisation
