Chair of the Board
youth sport trust

Job Description

Chair of the Board

A minimum commitment of 4 days per month

Loughborough

Do you believe in the power of sport to offer life lessons, develop life skills and affect young people’s life chances?  Are you passionate about building a brighter future for the next generation? If so, then this Chair of the Board for the Youth Sport Trust is the role for you.

We are all about changing lives through sport.  We are skilled in the use of physical education, physical activity and sport to unlock young people’s potential; we believe every child has a right to physical literacy, and work tirelessly to increase equality.  We have a track record in developing creativity, aspirations, resilience and empathy all through the unique vehicle of sport.

The Youth Sport Trust was established in 1995 by our benefactor and President, Sir John Beckwith supported by our Vice President Duncan Goodhew. The organisation is now the leading national charity working with schools on youth sport and is looking for a Chair who thrives on accountability, and is unfazed by the responsibility of being the guardian of our reputation.  We are looking for someone who will champion all we stand for and will promote our work through external relations and stakeholder engagement.

Over the past 4 years the work of the Youth Sport Trust has reached 4 million young people and we have trained thousands of practitioners.  We have been fortunate enough to work closely with government to influence policy and deliver national strategy, as well as in delivering and co-creating projects for a range of Trusts, Foundations, Lottery distributors and Corporates.  The charity has a wholly owned trading subsidiary, Youth Sport Direct and supports sport for development projects in 63 countries around the work through our ‘sister’ charity Youth Sport Trust International.

Under your leadership Trustees will be inspired to oversee a charity that is recognised for its effectiveness and sound governance. You will focus the Board on maximising impact for the young people we support as well as ensure they deliver business targets without compromising our moral position and brand. You will use your experience to facilitate high quality, impartial and objective decision making and will challenge and support the CEO and Executive Team in their execution of strategy and delivery of the mission and vision.

Candidates for the role will be expected to have non-executive director or trustee experience. Naturally, you will have knowledge and a genuine interest in the education and/or sport sector and/or youth sector too. A professional background in areas such as strategy, governance, finance, law, HR or fundraising would be highly valued.

If you possess all these attributes,  share our passionate belief in the benefits of sport for young people, and have the skills and energy to take a successful charity onto the next stage of its development please send in a comprehensive CV and covering letter to us via the link by 11 September 2017.  For more information on this role please visit our website.

Youth Sport Trust positively welcomes and seeks to ensure we achieve diversity in our workforce and that all job applicants and employees receive equal and fair treatment. We encourage applications from all candidates regardless of age, race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or nationality.
