Job Description

Could you help someone change their life and avoid reoffending after release from custody?

Criminal justice charity Belong aims to reduce crime and the harm that it causes. We are working in partnership with several criminal justice agencies to provide one to one support, in prisons and after release, to people who have offended and want to change their lives.

We have exciting opportunities available for committed, compassionate people to volunteer as one to one mentors with us. Volunteers will work with people serving sentences at one of the following prisons, depending on volunteers preference and availability:

  • HMPYOI Feltham, London
  • HMPYOI Isis, London
  • HMP The Mount, Hemel Hempstead
  • HMP Coldingley, Woking

One to one mentors will build a professional working relationship with individuals as they serve their custodial sentence, prepare for release and resettle into the community. Mentoring sessions will take place once per week or fortnight, for up to one hour per session. During the sessions volunteers will offer support to individuals to assist them to access education, training and employment in and outside of custody and to build and maintain positive relationships. Volunteers need to be able to commit to the role for 9 - 12 months. Mentoring sessions at HMPYOI Feltham will take place on weekdays from 8am to 5pm. Mentoring sessions at HMPYOI Isis, HMP Coldingley and HMP The Mount can take place on weekdays or at weekends.

Successful applicants will be invited to participate in an initial two day training course at HMPYOI Feltham on Saturday 16th June and Saturday 23rd June 2018.

Prison security vetting and an enhanced DBS check are required for this role and all volunteers will be supported to undergo this. After vetting processes are complete, further training will be provided at the prison in which mentors are volunteering, with a range of dates available.

Full support and supervision will be provided to volunteers.
