Chief Executive
bag books

Job Description

We design and construct multi-sensory books, organise storytelling and train storytellers. We promote and support multi-sensory storytelling world-wide and are still the only organisation in the world publishing multi-sensory books.

A fantastic opportunity has arisen at Bag Books for a new Chief Executive to head this unique charity.

Established in 1993, Bag Books is a UK-wide charity enhancing the lives of children and adults with severe or profound & multiple learning disabilities and/or severe autism spectrum disorder.

Our main activities are:

  • designing and making multi-sensory books – we design two or three new titles and make over 1,000 books per year. Each book is hand-made in our craft workshop taking around 9 hours to construct with a third of the labour coming from volunteers;
  • running multi-sensory storytelling sessions - we have 11 storytellers based around the UK. Last year we received feedback from over 750 special needs teachers who collectively observed over 4,500 of their pupils and judged that 96% of them benefited from our multi-sensory storytelling;
  • training others in multi-sensory storytelling – we train around 500 parents, carers, librarians and teachers each year; and
  • promoting and supporting multi-sensory storytelling world-wide. We host academics from around the world interested in multi-sensory storytelling but are still the only organisation in the world publishing multi-sensory books.

After 11 years with the charity our current Chief Executive is retiring and we are seeking a new leader with a trust fundraising and management background to steer the charity forward. As a small charity it’s a very hands-on role but the trustees, staff and volunteers are very supportive.

We have an exciting future:

  • Our book production is at a four-year high thanks in part to record numbers of volunteers.
  • We are just commencing a new three-year project in libraries funded by The National Lottery Community Fund.
  • Our current lease expires in November 2020 so we will need to relocate within London allowing the incoming CEO to set their mark on the charity.

The salary is £55,000 - £60,000 per annum for a 37.5 hour week with family friendly hours available by negotiation.

Closing date: 15th July, 2pm

Interviews: 23rd & 24th July at our craft workshop in SW8.

If you feel passionate and excited by this opportunity and feel you have the skills we are looking for, we very much look forward to receiving your application.
