Communications Director
liberty

Job Description

Liberty is a high-profile campaigning organisation that has been fighting for human rights and civil liberties for more than 80 years. We are independent and unshakeable. Our principles are guided by evidence and expertise – not political agenda, profit or popular opinion. We are not afraid to speak uncomfortable truths or challenge intolerance, injustice or abuse of power wherever we find it – but we always treat people with respect. We inspire and empower others to defend their own rights and the rights of their family, friends and communities. Together, we use our voice in courtrooms, in the news, on the streets and in politics to demand and deliver lasting change to benefit the many and the most vulnerable.

As the UK’s constitutional framework is re-written, as threats to our rights emerge from new capabilities and as communities develop fresh tactics for collective action, there is an opportunity for Liberty to set the agenda and empower people to understand, defend and respect rights and freedoms. This is Liberty’s challenge, and the Communications Director will be a vital part of the team that rises to meet it.

We are looking for an experienced, innovative and ambitious person to lead our fantastic Communications Team in exposing threats to rights and freedoms to the spotlight of public scrutiny through the press, social media and our website. You will forge collaborative partnerships; reach new audiences; influence across the political spectrum; maintain and grow Liberty’s high profile; and keep Liberty at the cutting edge of digital communications.

This is an exciting time at Liberty – with a brand refresh underway and funding to invest in digital communications, the role has real scope for creativity, growth and ambition.

The post-holder will be innovative and strategic, with substantial experience in a senior communications role, excellent judgment, a highly organised approach, strong project management skills, a thorough understanding of and interest in the media, politics and current affairs, and a nose for news.

They will have the ability to process complex issues swiftly, turning them into consistent, engaging and persuasive messages and communications strategies that resonate with a diverse range of external audiences, from judges to journalists and politicians to the public.

The Communications Director will join Liberty’s Senior Management Team, line managing four people directly, with responsibility for a team of five.  They will work closely and collaboratively with all Liberty’s teams, senior journalists, editors and producers, partner organisations and campaigners to promote our work, expose and challenge injustice and amplify the voices of those directly affected by the issues we campaign on. They will be a fair, compassionate and collegiate colleague, committed to building an inclusive organisational culture and nurturing our staff.

If  you are frustrated by the toxic, divisive debates that surround us and are ready to fight hard for justice, equality and freedom then we want to hear from you.

The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.
